Classes recommended

I will suggest appropriate classes (which have places available) and invite your child to trial classes at your convenience.

4 WEEK trial period

If they enjoy the 4 week trial classes then we will fully enrol your child and further classes continue!

It’s as easy as that!!

However, I know you may still have queries so here are some FAQs - please drop me a line if you have any other questions.

Q. How do I find out what classes you offer and when and where?

A. You can find all our styles, genres and age recommendations here, class times and days on our timetable, and studio locations katie philpott school of dance - Locations.

Q. Does my son/daughter need previous experience?

A. No – whatever age a child or young person joins KPSD and whether they have had previous training or not, we aim to place them in the appropriate level class for their full training to begin.

Q. How does my son/daughter join KPSD?

A. Please complete the on-line enquiry form and I will arrange a trial period of 4 weeks so that your child can get a real feel for the class they have chosen and to feel settled in the school.

Q. As a parent, can I watch my child’s class?

A. We do not allow parents to watch their child’s regular class as this is too distracting for the students. We do however encourage parents of young students to watch their first free trial class or longer if they need help settling in. At the end of each full term, we have an ‘open week’ where families are invited to come and watch the classes and see their child’s progress.

Q. Is there a uniform and does my child need one for their first class?

A. We have a uniform for all our classes and this can be purchased via Karen at kmrdancewear@ntlworld.com. We are lucky to have a dedicated dancewear shop and Karen is happy to deliver items to class in various sizes for your child to try on at home. We do not expect you to purchase any uniform or dancewear for your initial class – PE kit, t-shirt and leggings or any leotard and tights will be acceptable. We do however, ask that uniform be purchased within a month of registration. Details can be found on our uniform page.

Q. How do I pay the fees?

A. Fees are collected on the 1st of every month in advance by direct debit. Our school is open for 39 weeks a year and class fees are divided equally over a 12 month period. For example, a 45 minute weekly class is £5 and therefore £16.25 monthly.

Q. Can my son/daughter enter ISTD examinations?

A. We encourage all pupils to take exams in any of the syllabus classes (ballet, tap, modern, jazz awards) but this is NOT essential and a child can progress to the next level whether or not they decide not to take an exam. Exam entries are at the discretion of the teacher and all work must be covered by attending regularly with extra exam classes where required. Exam fees are non-refundable.

Q. Will my son/daughter take part in shows and events?

A. Every other year, we produce a main show at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield (usually March time) and our students also take part in performances at many local events such as school fairs, Mirfield Show, charity events etc throughout the whole school year.
